Lady Galway's Class

Lady Galway brings her passion for teaching, her expertise and years of learning from Sir James to the students of the Galway Flute Festival. Students of all levels are welcome to join in this class held every afternoon including a special class on technique, tone development and studies. Each active participant will have an opportunity to perform with a pianist in a masterclass setting and be coached by Lady Galway on this piece. Lady Galway has a teaching style that suits all levels of players and she shares her passion for playing the flute by making all students feel relaxed and worthy.

Lady Galway accepts students of all levels in her class. It would be helpful to have attained the equivalent of Grade 4/5 ABRSM to play some of the technical studies.

See the Participants & Visitors page for more information on Lady Galway's class and how to apply!

A graduate of New York City's Mannes College of Music, Lady Galway has risen to become one of the world's leading female flautists. She is an accomplished and much celebrated artist who regularly tours internationally in diverse and virtuosic programmes, and is also deeply committed to music education initiatives.

Lady Galway's concerto appearances have been with many of the leading orchestras in the United States, including Chicago, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh. In Europe, she regularly performs in London, Milan, Rome, Vienna, Salzburg and Zürich, and she frequently visits Tokyo, Beijing and Singapore. Forthcoming highlights of her 2015/2016 concert season include major tours of Asia, Europe and the United States.

In addition to her highly successful career as a soloist, Lady Galway is also an accomplished chamber musician, touring regularly with various chamber ensembles including her trio Zephyr (pianist Jonathan Feldman and cellist Darrett Adkins). The group's first recording, Zephyr - Winds of Romance, includes works by Haydn, Martinu and Weber. Lady Galway also works as the premiere flute duo partner of her husband Sir James Galway, delighting audiences worldwide, and in 2008 receiving the 'Spirit of Ireland' award in recognition for their roles as ambassadors for music. Lady Galway has recorded to critical acclaim for RCA, BMG Classics and Deutsche Grammophon.

Varied concert engagements include performances in the presence of The Empress of Japan, HRH The Earl and Countess of Wessex, TRH The Duke and Duchess of Kent, The Queen of Norway, The Queen of Spain, UK Prime Minister David Cameron, President Shimon Peres, President Mary McAleese, President Michael D. Higgins & Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny. Lady Galway serves as a patron to the charity Future Talent headed by the Duchess of Kent and Ambassador of The European Brain Council.

Actively pursuing her love of teaching, Lady Galway dedicates much of her time to working with the younger generation through her educational articles, mentoring of flute students, blogs and recordings. She created the ground-breaking 'First Flute' online education community with her husband, and also gives regular masterclasses of her own to aspiring flautists throughout the world. She devotes every summer to running the celebrated Galway Flute Festival in Switzerland.

Lady Jeanne is so warm and caring, so competent and with wisdom to give you great advice that will boost your flute playing and confidence.
She has an eye for the details, and she supports every person that she gets to work with.
We love LJ, as she creates a learning environment that gives us optimistic belief that we all can play better and have more joy from our flutes.

Lady Jeanne is passionate and enthusiastic about teaching and it is reflected in each of her classes. She inspires and encourages her students to be better musicians while maintaining a warm and supportive environment. Any student attending her class will be empowered to interpret and play their instrument at a higher level never before imagined.

I first attended the Galway Festival in 2013 after Lady Jeanne suggested I should go. I have to admit to being very nervous as my level of playing was not very good but Lady Jeanne has a way of making all her students feel like star performers and adjusts her teaching style effortlessly to match their level. Being a Galway student is like joining an extended family and the warmth and support from this class has been fantastic for both my playing and my soul. I have made so many flute friends from all around the world and gained so much confidence with the support of both students and Lady Jeanne.

I have been to Lady Galway’s classes at Weggis and will keep returning. Her dynamic style and total enthusiasm really give me the boost I need. Her teaching style is so fresh and yet so discerning. Not only does she help me but I pass much of her wisdom on to my students and use her tips when I am performing

Lady Jeanne is a totally dynamic, inspiring and encouraging flute teacher and a wonderful mentor! As a beginner in my late 40s her encouragement & positivity made me feel that yes, perhaps I really can do this! It is a privilege and a joy to attend her classes in Weggis, not only for my own lessons, but also witnessing how she gives so fully to each student of every age and level, seeing what they need and then witnessing their playing change in front of our eyes!
