sir james' class

Sir James selects 20 students for his masterclass using the submitted video recordings. Students must be able to play from memory and perform the pieces agreed to on their application form. Students must attend the entire festival in order to receive a lesson from Sir James.

To apply for Sir James' class, please fill out the Application form and pay the Application Fee either via PayPal or bank wire transfer by April 1. On your application, you must include YouTube or Vimeo links to two current (within 6 months) video recordings of contrasting works of standard flute repertoire with piano accompaniment (no piccolo repertoire). We must be able to hear and see you clearly in the video. ALL students (new and returning students) must submit video recordings with their application. No exceptions.

lady galway's class

Lady Galway's class accepts students of all levels. The class begins with a technical session concentrating on scales, studies and technique and is open to all active participants. Her students will have the opportunity to play their chosen piece with a pianist and be coached by Lady Galway. It would be helpful to have attained the equivalent of Grade 4/5 ABRSM to play some of the technical studies.

To apply for Lady Galway's class, please fill out the Application form and pay the Application Fee either via PayPal or bank wire transfer. As places are limited, we would advise anyone applying for Lady Galway's class to submit your application and application fee no later than May 1.

All classes will take place at Stella Matutina, either in the "Aula" or in the main building "Haupthaus". All participants are welcome to attend all activities. These include morning warm-ups with Sir James, masterclasses with Sir James and Lady Galway and the flute choir rehearsals. Sir James and Lady Galway wish to begin classes punctually every day. As a common courtesy to your fellow students, we would ask you kindly to be on time. Auditors and Daily Auditors are welcome to observe all workshops and classes.

There are a number of rooms available for rehearsal/practice, which will be numbered. These are allocated on a first come, first serve basis. We kindly ask you to only rehearse in these rooms and to leave them as you find them. It is your responsibility to arrange rehearsal times with your designated pianist.

NOTE: Please leave rooms as you find them. Remove all personal belongings, litter and papers; Replace all chairs/tables/music stands back where you found them; Switch off lights.

You are allowed to practice in your own room and throughout the buildings from 08.30 until 21.00.

Please note that the Aula is NOT available for students' use for private rehearsal/practice. We ask you to promptly leave the hall after classes as the Aula will be required and in use by the Guest Artists for rehearsal. Please respect the NO ENTRY policy during these rehearsals.

Saturday evening is our Grand Finale Concert, featuring the Galway Flute Choir conducted by Sir James and his assistant conductors. You may bring guests to this party, however they must pre-register and pay in advance (cost for guests is CHF 25.00/per person).

You are permitted to record (audio and/or visual) your own performance/masterclass lesson ONLY. It is strictly prohibited to record (audio and/or visual) any of the other masterclass events including warm-ups, rehearsals, evening concerts and other participants' lessons. Photography (no flash) is permitted for your personal use only.
